A beautifully atmospheric Soviet children's book featuring the masterful watercolor illustrations of Georgy Nikolsky (1906–1973), one of the most celebrated animalist painters of the USSR. Published by "Malysh" in 1969, the book tells the story of Urchuk, a wild wolf cub, and his interactions with the natural world and humans. Nikolsky's artwork elevates this large-format publication: his fluid, realistic watercolors capture the anatomy, movement, and psychology of the forest animals with profound respect and scientific accuracy, entirely avoiding the anthropomorphic caricatures often found in children's literature.
