Nikolai Stepanovich Barsamov (1892–1976) was a Soviet art historian, Doctor of Art History, and long-time director of the Feodosia Art Gallery named after I.K. Aivazovsky. He was the leading researcher of Aivazovsky's work and author of numerous studies on the artist's life and paintings.
Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky (1817–1900) was a world-famous Russian marine painter of Armenian origin, academician and professor of the Imperial Academy of Arts, author of over 6,000 paintings, with the sea as the main theme of his work.
This is a 1941 Soviet monograph on the legendary Russian-Armenian marine painter Ivan Aivazovsky, authored by the prominent art historian Nikolai Barsamov. Published by Iskusstvo on the eve of World War II, this richly illustrated volume features 25 separate plates of Aivazovsky's iconic seascapes. It represents a significant scholarly work from the late Stalinist period, offering critical analysis of the artist's technique and legacy just before the wartime devastation would reshape Soviet cultural life.
