Francis Bacon (1561-1626), Lord Chancellor of England under James I and one of the founding figures of modern scientific method, set out in the "Novum Organum" (1620) a systematic critique of Aristotelian and scholastic logic and proposed inductive reasoning grounded in controlled observation and experiment as the proper instrument for the advance of natural knowledge. Structured, in Bacon's characteristic aphoristic style, as two books of numbered aphorisms - the first cataloguing the "idols" of the mind that distort perception, the second laying out his method of induction by exclusion - the treatise remained unfinished at Bacon's death but exercised enormous influence on the later development of English empiricism and the Royal Society tradition. This Russian edition, issued by the State Socio-Economic Publishing House (Sotsekgiz) in Moscow in 1938 as part of the "Classics of Philosophy" series sponsored by the Institute of Philosophy of the USSR Academy of Sciences, follows the pioneering Soviet translation first published in Leningrad in 1935; Bacon's insistence on experimental, materialist methodology and his polemic against scholastic authority made him a canonical figure for Soviet historians of philosophy in the 1930s, when a wave of academy-sponsored editions of the European rationalist and empiricist tradition (Descartes, Spinoza, Hobbes, Berkeley, Bacon) was issued for the Soviet philosophical curriculum. The volume carries an inserted portrait plate of Bacon after the well-known engraved likeness. Complete, well-preserved copies of this specific Moscow printing - distinct from the more commonly encountered 1935 Leningrad first edition - are of interest to collectors assembling the Soviet academy series of philosophical classics and to historians of science tracing the reception of Baconian empiricism in Soviet intellectual life.
