A collective volume issued by the state art publisher Iskusstvo in 1940, the year of the Decade of Belarusian Art in Moscow, for which the same house also printed a series of festival posters under the same editor, S. Danilin. The book presents the republic to a Moscow audience in six essays: an introductory statement by P. Ponomarenko, then Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party (Bolsheviks) of Belorussia, a survey of the artistic creativity of the Belarusian people by A. Ozirsky, a history of the drama theatres by V. Volsky, E. Romanovich and A. Segedi, a study of music and opera by V. Gorodinsky, a survey of the fine arts by I. Mashkovtsev, and a closing essay on Belarusian folk creativity by M. Grinblat. The text discusses the operas shown at the Decade, including Bogatyrev's In the Forests of Polesie, and traces the careers of Vitebsk painters such as Yehuda Pen and L. Alperovich. The illustrations include colour plates of paintings and stage designs, and the title page and the opening of the first essay carry red and black ornaments modelled on Belarusian woven patterns. A similar pattern is embossed in the publisher's binding and framed by gilt borders, an unusually decorative design for the period. Written after the incorporation of Western Belorussia in 1939, the volume is a characteristic document of Soviet nationalities policy in the arts and is useful for the study of festival culture of the late 1930s. The colophon records an edition of 7,000 copies. A printed slip of errata is pasted in at the end. It will interest collectors of Belarusian culture, Soviet theatre and music history, and Jewish artists of Vitebsk.
