Volume 68 of the Academy of Sciences series Materials and Research on the Archaeology of the USSR is a landmark of Soviet Caucasian archaeology, devoted to the poorly studied north-east Caucasus. Its core is the first publication of the monograph by Aleksandr P. Kruglov (died 1942 at the Leningrad front), based on the 1936-1939 excavations of the North Caucasian Expedition at Kayakent, Dzhemikent, Khorochoi, Belgatoi and other sites in Dagestan and Chechnya. It treats the Copper Age settlement at Kayakent, Early Bronze Age mounds and the Late Bronze and Early Iron Age burial grounds that define the Kayakent-Khorochoi culture. The dissertation, defended in 1941, remained unpublished for seventeen years. For this volume Ksenia Kushnareva wrote the introduction and notes updating the findings, restored the illustrations lost during the war and added the corrections, and Aleksandr Iessen edited the text. The volume also contains R. M. Munchaev and K. F. Smirnov's report on the early Bronze Age and Early Iron Age burials and settlement near Karabudakhkent in Dagestan, and Evgeny Krupnov's study of the Cimmerians in the north Caucasus. Responsible editor was Boris Piotrovsky. The print run was 2,200 copies. It is of lasting interest to collectors and libraries working on Bronze Age and Iron Age Caucasus, Dagestan and the early peoples of the north-east Caucasus.
