Amir Khusrau Dihlavi (1253-1325) is regarded as the foremost figure of Indo-Persian literature and the first major continuator of the school of the great Azerbaijani-Persian poet Nizami Ganjavi. His Khamsa, modelled on that of Nizami, is counted among the jewels of Eastern literature, and "Majnun u Layli", completed in 1299, is its third poem and the first poetic response to Nizami's "Layli u Majnun", prized for the elegance and musicality of its language. No autograph of the poet survives, and manuscripts from the fourteenth century onward are dispersed among libraries and museums worldwide; their textual divergences made a critical edition necessary. The present volume is the first scholarly critical text, established by the Azerbaijani Orientalist T. A. Magerramov from seven manuscripts and one lithographed edition, with a Russian preface, and issued in the prestigious academic series "Monuments of the Literature of the Peoples of the East" (Texts, Large Series, VII), co-published by the Institute of the Peoples of Asia in Moscow and the Institute of Oriental Studies in Baku under Nauka's Main Editorial Office of Oriental Literature. The Persian text is set in Arabic script and read from the reverse cover, with the Russian scholarly apparatus at the front. A large-format reference edition for collectors of classical Persian poetry, Soviet Oriental studies, and the Layla-Majnun tradition.
