The standard modern edition of one of the foundational texts of twentieth-century general topology, first introducing to a wide readership the concept of bicompactness (now known internationally as compactness in the Alexandrov-Urysohn sense) alongside a systematic theory of compact and locally compact topological spaces. Pavel Urysohn (1898-1924), one of the most brilliant of the young Moscow mathematicians of the 1920s and a co-founder, with Pavel Alexandrov, of the Soviet school of general topology, died in a drowning accident off the Breton coast in August 1924 at the age of twenty-six, before the work could be published. Alexandrov, his closest collaborator and friend, saw the memoir into print only after prolonged delay: the manuscript was eventually forwarded, on Brouwer's recommendation, to the Verhandelingen of the Amsterdam Academy of Sciences, where it appeared in French in 1929, five years after Urysohn's death. This third Russian edition presents Alexandrov's own retrospective account of the work's genesis and its place within the Hausdorff tradition of set-theoretic topology, alongside the full original text with extensive editorial notes. The memoir remains, in Alexandrov's own later description, one of the natural first books for a student encountering general topology, and is essential reading for historians of Soviet mathematics and specialists in point-set topology.
