One of the great primary sources for medieval Kipchak Turkic: "al-Tuhfat al-Zakiyya fi al-Lughat al-Turkiyya" ("A Rare/Excellent Gift Concerning the Turkic Language"), a fourteenth-century Arabic-language dictionary and grammar of Mamluk-Kipchak, composed by an anonymous author in Mamluk Egypt, drawing in part on the earlier philological work of Abu Hayyan al-Gharnati. The unique surviving manuscript, held in the Bayezid Library in Istanbul (91 folios, 182 pages), contains roughly three thousand Kipchak words together with a grammatical section, and stands alongside the "Codex Cumanicus" and Abu Hayyan's "Kitab al-Idrak" among the foundational medieval sources for Kipchak, and by extension for the historical linguistics of Kazakh, Tatar, and other modern Kipchak-Turkic languages. The manuscript became known in Western scholarship in 1922; the Arabic text was first published in Budapest in 1942 by Tibor Halasi-Kun, followed by a Turkish translation by Besim Atalay in 1945. The present volume, prepared and translated into Uzbek by the philologist S. M. Mutallibov and issued by the Uzbek Academy of Sciences' Pushkin Institute in a print run of 1,300 copies, was the first Uzbek-language edition of the text and remains a standard reference for Turkologists and specialists in Kipchak historical linguistics, Mamluk-era philology, and Golden Horde and Central Asian manuscript studies.
