The foundational text of modern Eastern Armenian prose, in the standard Soviet-era Russian translation. Khachatur Abovyan (1809-1848) is regarded as the father of modern Eastern Armenian literary language: educated at Dorpat University, he was among the first Armenian intellectuals to write in the living vernacular of Ararat rather than the archaic literary Grabar, and vanished without trace in 1848 in circumstances never explained. "The Wounds of Armenia" (Verk Hayastani), written in 1841 but published only in 1858 in Tiflis a decade after his disappearance, is considered the first Armenian novel: a historical narrative set during the Russo-Persian War of 1826-28, dramatizing the suffering of the Armenian population under Persian rule and framing incorporation into the Russian Empire as the nation's deliverance, a reading that made the book a natural candidate for canonical status in the Soviet Armenian literary curriculum. The present Russian version is the work of the poet and classicist Sergei Shervinsky (1892-1991), a longtime translator of Armenian poetry commissioned for the centenary of Abovyan's death, working from a literal crib supplied by the lexicographer M. Gevorkyan; first issued in 1948, it became the standard Russian rendering and was reprinted in Yerevan in 1955, 1971 and 1977. The Armenian-language ornamental half-title bearing the original title "Verk Hayastani" faces the Russian title page as a bilingual gesture typical of Armgiz literary production of the period. Of interest to collectors of Caucasian and Armenian literature in translation and to specialists in nineteenth-century Armenian national revival.
