This book explores remarkable monuments of Russian wooden architecture, once found throughout the territory of Ancient Rus'. For many historical reasons, the northern regions of Russia, including Siberia, became their preserve. This book covers village and churchyard ensembles, peasant huts and outbuildings, churches and chapels, bridges and fences, mills and hunting lodges. The book includes materials on not only little-studied monuments but also those that have become world-famous. These materials allow for a more complete understanding of the pan-Russian traditions of wooden architecture and its local characteristics. Not only natural photographs are presented, but also measured drawings of the monuments, as well as their graphic reconstructions.
