A scarce 1938 anthology presenting Russian renderings of Renaissance French verse, featuring works by Villon, Marot, Ronsard, Du Bellay, and their contemporaries. Of particular scholarly interest is the mistaken attribution in the index: Villon's "On the Ladies of Past Times" is credited to Osip Mandelstam, though the translation was actually executed by Nikolai Stepanovich Gumilev (1886-1921), the poet and husband of Anna Akhmatova, whose legacy was suppressed until his posthumous rehabilitation in 1991. An important document of early Soviet literary translation and cultural history.
