Enrico Fermi (1901–1954) was an Italian and American physicist, one of the founders of nuclear and neutron physics, Nobel Prize laureate in Physics in 1938, leader of the group that built the world's first nuclear reactor. His work laid the foundations of modern elementary particle physics and quantum field theory.

The book is a transcript of lectures in which Fermi presents the foundations of the theory of elementary particle interactions, as it existed at the turn of the 1940s–1950s, in an accessible and clear manner. The author deliberately minimizes the complex mathematical apparatus of quantum field theory, replacing it with qualitative estimates and physical reasoning. This makes the book a brilliant example of high-level scientific popularization, retaining its value as a historical document from the era of the formation of high-energy physics.
