Grigory Nikiforovich Pozhii (1914–2001) was a Soviet and Ukrainian mathematician, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, professor, Honored Scientist of the Ukrainian SSR, one of the leading representatives of the Kiev school of equations of mathematical physics. He was the author of fundamental works in the field of boundary value problems for equations of elliptic and parabolic types, as well as a renowned educator whose textbook became a classic for several generations of students.
The book is a comprehensive university course based on lectures delivered by the author at Kiev State University. Unlike many traditional expositions, the work begins with an examination of the physical processes leading to the basic equations and general questions of the theory. The properties of elliptic equations are studied in detail, followed by parabolic and hyperbolic ones. The methods of separation of variables and integral transforms are presented uniformly in an appendix covering all types of equations. Distinguished by its methodological thoughtfulness and rigor, this textbook served for many years as one of the primary manuals for mathematics and physics departments of higher education institutions in the USSR.
