This 1869 monograph is an exceptionally rare first edition of the early work by Vasily Karlovich Nadler (1840–1894), a distinguished professor and dean at Kharkov and Novorossiysk (Odessa) Universities. Written during his tenure at Kharkov University, this essay explores the spiritual and artistic foundations of the Arab Caliphate from the dawn of Islam to the 11th century. Nadler was one of the few Russian historians of his era to provide a synthesis of social history and cultural expression, moving beyond mere military chronicles to examine the "inner life" of the Arab people.
He analyzes the evolution of worldview, religious ideals, and social structures as reflected in poetry and the arts. Drawing upon the rigorous scholarship of 19th-century European giants like Carl Ritter, Gustav Weil, and Reinhart Dozy, Nadler’s work bridged Western orientalist methodologies with the Russian academic tradition. Despite the condition flaws, this Kharkov University imprint remains a significant monument of 19th-century Russian historiography and a prize for collectors of Oriental studies and pre-revolutionary academic literature.
