This two-volume set is the crowning achievement of Academician Ivan Meshchaninov’s lifelong research into the extinct Urartian language. Spoken in the Kingdom of Van (Urartu) on the Armenian Highlands from the 9th to 6th centuries BCE, Urartian remained a mystery until the systematic decipherment of its unique cuneiform inscriptions. Meshchaninov, one of the most influential Soviet linguists and a key figure in the development of the typology of languages, provides a rigorous structural analysis that remains a cornerstone of Near Eastern philology.
The first volume (1958) focuses on nominal parts of speech, detailing the complex declension system and the specific semantic functions of cases. The second volume (1962) explores the verb structure, analyzing the ergative alignment and the sophisticated system of aspect and mood that characterizes the language. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Meshchaninov’s work on Urartian stood the test of time, moving away from more controversial linguistic theories toward a strict, evidence-based descriptive grammar. Published in very limited runs by the Academy of Sciences, complete sets in good condition are exceptionally rare and highly sought after by Hittitologists, Assyriologists, and specialists in Caucasian and Ancient Near Eastern studies.
