This 1934 Leningrad edition is the first Russian translation of the seminal work Theory of Vibrating Systems and Sound by the American physicist Irving B. Crandall. Published posthumously in the USSR, the book arrived at a critical moment when Soviet science was rapidly developing its foundations in telecommunications, architectural acoustics, and the emerging field of sound cinema.
Crandall, a brilliant engineer at Bell Telephone Laboratories, was a pioneer in applying electrical circuit analogies to mechanical and acoustic systems. His "Acoustics" is noted for its rigorous mathematical approach to sound wave theory, the radiation of sound, and the behavior of vibrating membranes and plates. The book effectively bridged the gap between classical 19th-century acoustics and the modern electro-acoustics required for the development of high-fidelity microphones, loudspeakers, and telephony.
The Soviet edition was edited by Sergey Sokolov, a prominent scientist who later became the "father of ultrasonic flaw detection." Sokolov's notes adapted Crandall's advanced theories for the use of Soviet students and engineers at VETA (All-Union Electrical Engineering Association) and KUBUCH (Commission for the Improvement of the Living Conditions of Students). This publication is a significant historical record of international scientific exchange and remains a foundational text for historians of physics and technology.
