A samizdat collection, a typewritten copy of the last lifetime poetry collection by Osip Mandelshtam (1891–1938), dated 1928. The book comprises three parts: 1) Kamen (Stone, early poems including the 1913 collection); 2) Tristia (1922 collection); 3) poems from 1921–1925. This collection covers key stages of Mandelshtam’s oeuvre, one of the greatest poets of the Silver Age and a leading figure of Acmeism, whose works are renowned for their profound imagery, philosophical depth, and musicality.
Created in the 1970s, this typewritten copy reflects the surge of interest in Mandelshtam’s poetry among the Soviet intelligentsia, sparked by the 1973 publication of his poems in the Biblioteka Poeta series and the popularization of his works through songs by Alla Pugacheva (“Musician” and “Leningrad”). In an era of scarce official editions, samizdat was the primary means of disseminating Mandelshtam’s texts. The high-quality typescript highlights the care and dedication invested in this copy, likely produced for personal use or circulation among poetry enthusiasts.
