This 1907 volume is a true milestone in the history of science: the first Russian edition of James Clerk Maxwell’s seminal 1855–1856 paper, "On Faraday’s Lines of Force." It was in these pages that Maxwell first translated Michael Faraday’s intuitive physical "lines of force" into the rigorous language of mathematics, laying the cornerstone for modern Electrodynamics.
The work is divided into three parts, detailing the static state, stationary currents, and the "electrotonic state." However, what makes this specific edition exceptional is the inclusion of a 50-page appendix by Ludwig Boltzmann. One of the fathers of statistical mechanics, Boltzmann provided extensive mathematical clarifications that are considered a scientific achievement in their own right. Published in pre-revolutionary Moscow, this fragile edition represents the moment Maxwell's field theory truly entered the Russian scientific consciousness. Despite the wear to the binding, it remains an essential piece of primary literature for collectors of physics history and rare technical first editions.
