Korints, Yuri Iosifovich. Choose Any Horse (Vibiray konya lyubogo). / Illustrated by Tatyana Mavrina.
Moscow: Detgiz, 1963.
22 pp., color illustrations. Publisher’s illustrated softcover, large format (28 × 21.8 cm). Condition: Very good.
This 1963 edition is a brilliant example of the "Mavrina style" that revolutionized Soviet children's book illustration. Yuri Korints, a poet known for his gentle lyricism and rhythmic simplicity, provides the perfect canvas for Tatyana Mavrina (1902–1996), the only Soviet artist to ever receive the Hans Christian Andersen Medal.
In Choose Any Horse, Mavrina draws deeply from the well of Russian folk art, Lubok prints, and clay toy traditions (Dymkovo and Filimonovo). Her horses are not merely animals but vibrant, decorative symbols of movement and joy, rendered in a bright, fauvist palette that was daring for the early 1960s. The oversized format of this Detgiz publication allows her sweeping, painterly compositions to dominate the page, turning each spread into a gallery piece.
For collectors, this book is a prime specimen of the "Thaw" era's aesthetic freedom, where children's literature became a refuge for sophisticated graphic experimentation. Finding a softcover edition from this period in "very good" condition is increasingly difficult, as these books were intended for active nursery use. It remains a cornerstone of Soviet graphic art and a testament to Mavrina's status as the "fairytale painter" of the 20th century.
