This 1923 edition is a remarkable artifact of the "Atomic Fever" that gripped Europe following the Great War. Published by the Russian émigré press "Nauka i zhizn" (Science and Life) in Berlin and Riga, it represents one of the earliest comprehensive introductions to the science of radioactivity available to the Russian-speaking public.
Professor Paul Ludewig, a specialist in radiological measurement, systematically outlines the revolutionary discoveries of the era. The book details the isolation of Radium by the Curies, Ernest Rutherford’s models of atomic decay, and Frederick Soddy’s work on isotopes. Despite its "popular" aim, the text is technically precise, containing 37 illustrations of early ionization chambers, electroscopes, and the characteristic tracks of alpha and beta particles. This pocket-sized volume captured the world's changing physical paradigm at a time when the practical and medical applications of radiation were just beginning to be understood. It is a rare find for collectors of early 20th-century physics and Russian diaspora publications.
