Zundel (1931–2007), professor at the Physikalisch-Chemisches Institut of the University of Munich, undertook a systematic infrared-spectroscopic study of hydrated polyelectrolyte membranes and showed that the excess proton in aqueous solution is delocalized between two water molecules in a symmetrical, polarizable hydrogen-bonded complex — the species now universally known as the \"Zundel cation,\" H₅O₂⁺. This insight, complementary to Eigen's earlier H₉O₄⁺ structure, became one of the two canonical limiting models for proton solvation and remains central to the theory of proton transport in water, biological membranes and fuel-cell electrolytes. The volume develops the structural, electrochemical and thermodynamic consequences of these hydrogen-bonded interactions for hydrophilic polymers, examining the spectral signatures of carboxylic, sulphonic and ammonium polyelectrolytes under controlled humidity and supplying the experimental basis for Zundel's later programme on polarizable hydrogen bonds in enzymes. The Russian edition was issued by «Mir», the principal Soviet publisher of foreign scientific literature, with editorial supervision by the biophysicist Yu. N. Chirgadze, and gave generations of Soviet electrochemists, polymer scientists and molecular biophysicists access to a work that has since become a classic of physical chemistry.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Stanza Rare Books","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":44291851255850,"sku":null,"price":50.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0701\/6359\/5306\/files\/IMG_1687.jpg?v=1777287234","url":"https:\/\/stanzararebooks.com\/products\/zundel-georg-hydration-and-intermolecular-interaction-infrared-investigations-with-polyelectrolyte-membranes-gidratatsiya-i-mezhmolekulyarnoe-vzaimodeystvie-1972-in-russian","provider":"Stanza Rare Books","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
