Born into a peasant family in the village of Karaklis (present-day Vanadzor), Zoryan began publishing at seventeen and built his early reputation, prior to the 1917 revolution, on lyrical, unsentimental portraits of Armenian village and small-town life, gathered in his first collection \"Gloomy People\" (1918); he went on to a long career encompassing the autobiographical novel \"The History of One Life,\" the historical novels \"King Pap\" and \"The Armenian Fortress,\" and a celebrated Armenian translation of Tolstoy's \"War and Peace.\" The present stories, narrated in the first person and drawn from the author's own rural Transcaucasian childhood, center on animals - a one-eared farm dog named Chalank, feuding and befriended dogs and cats, a grape-thieving hedgehog, a traveling dog named Jeko - rendered with the same warm, unsentimental observational eye found in Zoryan's adult fiction; several of the individual stories, including \"Traveler Jeko,\" were later reissued as separate illustrated picture books for Armenian children. Notably, each story in this Russian-language collection was rendered by a different named translator, suggesting the pieces were assembled here from existing periodical or anthology translations rather than commissioned as a single unified project.
