This volume gathers his three verse dramas - \"The Dawns\" (\"Les Aubes\"), \"Philip II\", and \"Helen of Sparta\" - alongside his prose monographs on Rembrandt and Rubens, presenting Verhaeren the dramatist and art critic alongside the more familiar lyric poet. The translations are of particular interest: \"The Dawns\" and the Rembrandt and Rubens studies were translated by Valery Bryusov (1873-1924), the leading Russian Symbolist poet and Verhaeren's principal early champion and translator in Russia, the Rembrandt study made jointly with his wife Ioanna Bryusova; \"Philip II\" was translated by Nina Manukhina and \"Helen of Sparta\" by Bryusov, with Wilhelm Levik contributing further translation work, going on himself to become one of the twentieth century's foremost Soviet translators of European poetry. The edition was prepared under the general editorship of Georgy Shengeli (1894-1956), himself a significant poet, translator, and versification scholar, with notes by G. S. Piralov.
