Bartel Leendert van der Waerden (1903-1996) was among the leading mathematicians of the twentieth century - best known for his landmark textbook \"Moderne Algebra\" (1930-1931, developed in collaboration with Emmy Noether and Emil Artin), which shaped abstract algebra for generations - and \"Awakening Science\" represents his major contribution to the history of science. The book traces the development of mathematics from ancient Egypt and Babylonia through to the decline of Greek mathematics in late antiquity: the Egyptian Rhind and Moscow Papyri, Babylonian clay tablet numerals and quadratic methods, Pythagorean mathematics and the discovery of incommensurable quantities, the circle of Plato's Academy, Eudoxus's method of exhaustion, and the great Hellenistic mathematicians - Euclid, Archimedes, Eratosthenes, Apollonius of Perga, Diophantus, and Pappus - as well as Hypatia and the Athenian school's last figures. The Russian translation by I. N.
