Text blocks firm, text complete.

Boris Alexandrovich Turaev (1868-1920) was the founder of Russian Egyptology and the leading pre-revolutionary Russian historian of the Ancient Near East, a professor at St. Petersburg University whose "History of the Ancient East" stood as the standard Russian-language synthesis of the field, covering Egypt, Babylonia, Assyria, Palestine, Syria, Asia Minor, and Iran and drawing extensively on Turaev's own translations of primary cuneiform, hieroglyphic, and other ancient documentary sources. After his death, the eminent Soviet Egyptologist and ancient historian Vasily Struve, together with I.L. Snegirev, undertook the editorial work of preparing Turaev's text for a new Soviet readership: their June 1935 preface assesses Turaev's place in the historical study of the Ancient East and situates his findings within a framework of socio-economic formations, while leaving intact Turaev's narrative and his rich apparatus of translated primary texts. The present set comprises the third stereotype printing of volume one and the second stereotype printing of volume two, both dated 1936; each volume carries several tipped-in color plates reproducing Egyptian and Mesopotamian art and artifacts, and volume two includes a large folding map of the Ancient Near East. The Struve-Snegirev edition of Turaev remained the standard Soviet university textbook on the Ancient Near East for a generation, foundational reading within the same Leningrad/St. Petersburg Orientalist tradition - Struve, Diakonov, Piotrovsky - that continued to define Soviet Assyriology and Egyptology through the mid-twentieth century, making this set a natural companion to later works by Diakonov and Piotrovsky in any working library of Ancient Near Eastern studies.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0701/6359/5306/files/IMG_9922_c50fa667-49ce-4921-9d8a-78fac0012cbd.jpg?v=1785128754
https://stanzararebooks.com/products/turaev-boris-a-history-of-the-ancient-east-in-two-volumes-edited-by-v-v-struve-i-l-snegirev-1936-in-russian
