Stoilow's central mathematical achievement, now known as Stoilow's theorem, established a purely topological characterization of analytic mappings as interior (light, open) mappings, a result that reoriented the study of Riemann surfaces and laid the groundwork for the modern topological approach to function theory. Translated from the Romanian originals \"Teoria functiilor de o variabila complexa,\" volume I (Bucharest, 1954) and volume II, written with Cabiria Andreian Cazacu (Bucharest, 1958), the course moves from the fundamental principles of complex analysis through periodic and meromorphic functions, entire functions of finite order, and multivalued analytic functions in volume one, to harmonic functions, the topological classification of Riemann surfaces, and the theory of covering surfaces after Ahlfors in volume two. The publisher's foreword to the first volume records a poignant circumstance of the book's genesis: Stoilow died in the course of preparing this Russian edition of his course and never lived to see it published; the translation was completed at the suggestion of the late academician by one of his own students, I.
