On the free front endpaper, the author's own ink presentation inscription in Georgian cursive with her signed initials, dated 9 November 1971.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA scarce and bibliographically important descriptive grammar of Karata (caratin, kʼirⅡi-mac'ʼi), one of the Andic languages of the Northeast Caucasian (Nakh-Daghestanian) family, spoken by some six to seven thousand people in the high mountain villages of Karata, Anchikh, Archo, Lower Inkhelo and Tokita in the Akhvakh and Botlikh districts of western Daghestan. Karata is — like the rest of the Andic group — an unwritten language whose speakers operate institutionally through Avar; without descriptive monographs of this kind it remains effectively invisible in the historical record. Zagidat Magomedovna Magomedbekova (1925–2007) was the principal Soviet authority on the Andic languages; trained at the famous Tbilisi school of Caucasian linguistics under Arnold Chikobava, she devoted her career to descriptive grammars of Akhvakh, Karata, Bagvalal and related Andic tongues — much of her working life spent at the Chikobava Institute of Linguistics of the Georgian Academy of Sciences in Tbilisi, which is reflected here in her use of Georgian script for the inscription. The present volume — comprising a systematic grammatical analysis (phonology, nominal and verbal morphology, with separate treatment of the Tokita dialect), an annotated corpus of texts, and a substantial Karata–Russian lexicon (from p. 219 onwards) — remains the standard reference for the language and is consulted continuously today by Caucasus typologists worldwide. It was issued by Metsniereba in Tbilisi as part of the post-war effort to document the smaller indigenous languages of the Caucasus, an effort in which the Tbilisi school played the leading role thanks to the dense Daghestani linguistic ties of the Chikobava Institute. With a print run of only 1,000 copies distributed almost exclusively through specialised academic channels, copies are uncommon in the trade. The fact that this is an author-inscribed presentation copy from the year of publication — Magomedbekova herself having dedicated it in Georgian to a colleague within the Tbilisi Caucasiological circle — places it in the small population of association copies of fundamental Daghestani grammatical literature, the kind of provenance that is actively sought by Caucasus-studies libraries and serious private collectors.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Stanza Rare Books","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":44300550471722,"sku":null,"price":200.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0701\/6359\/5306\/files\/IMG_2087.jpg?v=1777498521","url":"https:\/\/stanzararebooks.com\/products\/signed-z-m-magomedbekova-the-karata-language-grammatical-analysis-texts-dictionary-karatinskii-yazyk-grammaticheskii-analiz-teksty-slovar-1971-in-russian-with-karata-language-texts-and-lexicon","provider":"Stanza Rare Books","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
