Condition very good: wrappers clean with light edge wear; text block firm, leaves clean throughout.

Ivan (Ivane) Nikolaevich Shervashidze's monograph provides a comprehensive descriptive and distributional analysis of the verb system in the oldest attested monuments of Turkic writing, the Orkhon-Yenisei runic inscriptions of the later first millennium AD. Working within the strong Georgian tradition of Oriental philology at the Tsereteli Institute, Shervashidze treats verbal derivation (voice categories, causatives, transitivity), the full paradigm of tense and mood forms, participles and converbs, and the phonological and graphemic characteristics of the runic alphabet. The book is further notable for advancing a new interpretation of the famous Hunnic (Xiongnu) couplet preserved in Chinese characters in the seventh-century "Jin shu" chronicle, a text of considerable interest to Turkologists concerned with the earliest traces of Turkic speech. Edited by the corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences E. R. Tenishev and reviewed by leading Georgian orientalists, it was issued in a run of only 1,000 copies and is a scarce specialist reference in Turkic historical linguistics and runology.
