Solomon Andriasdze Lionidze served as mdivan-mts'ighnobari, chancellor and chief secretary, of Erekle II's chancellery, and is principally remembered, alongside the conservative wing of the Bagrationi court, for his opposition to the Treaty of Georgievsk and the gradual absorption of the eastern Georgian kingdoms into the Russian Empire. His funeral oration, composed and delivered as Erekle II was laid to rest in the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral at Mtskheta, has become a touchstone of late classical Georgian prose, distinguished by a high rhetorical register, dense biblical and patristic allusion, and its symbolic position at the very close of the literary tradition of the autocephalous Georgian state. The oration is preserved in an autograph manuscript of the late eighteenth century, was first printed in the Tbilisi journal \"Tsiskari\" in 1877, and is here issued for the first time in a critical scholarly edition, with a corrected text drawn directly from the autograph, an extensive introductory study on Lionidze and his oratorical work, a textual commentary, lexicon, glossary, name and word indices, and six plates including the autograph manuscript itself. The compiler, Nikoloz Iliasdze Kandelaki (1907–1965), was a leading Georgian literary scholar and the foundational modern authority on Georgian rhetorical literature, whose subsequent monographs on classical Georgian rhetoric and the early Georgian orators (Tbilisi, 1958, 1961, 1975) form the basis of the modern academic study of Georgian eloquence as a literary genre. Inscribed presentation copies from Kandelaki, dated within months of publication and bearing his self-identification \"from the author\", are scarce on the market and of strong association interest within the corpus of late eighteenth-century Georgian literary scholarship.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Stanza Rare Books","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":44308621066282,"sku":null,"price":120.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0701\/6359\/5306\/files\/IMG_2346.jpg?v=1777747642","url":"https:\/\/stanzararebooks.com\/products\/signed-by-the-compiler-lionidze-solomon-the-lament-spoken-at-the-funeral-of-king-erekle-ii-sitqva-itkmuli-erekle-meoris-dakrdzalvaze-text-established-and-with-an-introductory-study-by-nikoloz-kandelaki-1957-in-georgian","provider":"Stanza Rare Books","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
