Text block very good: toned.

Leonid Petrovich Semenov (1886-1959), best known as a Lermontov scholar, also worked in Vladikavkaz as an archaeologist and ethnographer, and in this short report he summarizes the first systematic survey of Ingush antiquities. The fieldwork ran from 1925 to 1927: the plain and foothills in 1925, the mountain valleys in 1926, and in 1927 an expedition by the reorganized Ingush Institute of Local Lore and the Ingush Literary Society to the Dzheirakh and Metskhal districts, joined by the linguist Z. K. Malsagov, the artist Kh. B. Akhriev and the orientalist I. N. Borozdin. Semenov sorts the monuments into three groups: defensive (towers, castles, camps), religious (pillar-shaped shrines and temples) and funerary (memorial slabs, above-ground and semi-subterranean crypts, cave and ground burials). The ethnographic part records local legends tied to the monuments, the cult of the shrines, and a 1927 summer festival near Beyni and Metskhal. Halftone photographs show castle ruins on the Assa, the towers of Egikal and the elder Edzhi Akhriev of Furtoug. Later writers credit Semenov with an early dating of the Targim temple and with the first comparison of Ingush material culture with Phrygian parallels. The pamphlet was printed in only 500 copies by the state printing house of the Ingush Autonomous Region, and its fragile paper wrappers rarely survive in good order. It is a primary source for the architecture, folklore and religious life of Ingushetia in the last decade before the region's administrative and demographic upheavals, and will interest collectors of Caucasian ethnography and archaeology, students of Vainakh culture, and libraries documenting early Soviet local-history scholarship.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0701/6359/5306/files/IMG_6161_c014d1a6-81c8-474e-8259-f7e0b0bee333.jpg?v=1792144355
https://stanzararebooks.com/products/semenov-l-archaeological-and-ethnographic-investigations-in-ingushetia-in-1925-27-arkheologicheskiye-i-etnograficheskiye-razyskaniya-v-ingushii-v-1925-27-g-g-vladikavkaz-1928-in-russian
