Sakhokia began his fieldwork in the 1880s-1890s under the patronage of Ilia Chavchavadze, and from 1896, while working for the newspaper \"Tsnobis Purtseli,\" undertook journeys through Guria, Achara (then recently liberated from Ottoman rule), Samurzakano, and Apkhazeti, recording customs, oral traditions, dialect vocabulary, and daily life at the close of the nineteenth century. His observations, originally serialized in the periodicals \"Moambe\" and \"Tsnobis Purtseli\" between 1897 and 1901, were gathered into this single volume only in 1950, when the author was eighty-two years old. The edition was prepared under the editorship of Giorgi Chitaia (1890-1986), founder of the Georgian school of ethnology and later founder of the Tbilisi Open-Air Museum of Ethnography (1960), lending the volume additional scholarly authority.
