It tells in some sixteen hundred quatrains of the Indian prince Tariel, the Arabian knight Avtandil and the princess Nestan-Darejan, and has served for eight centuries as the foundation of Georgian literary identity. The present volume is a contemporary illustrated edition issued by Bakur Sulakauri Publishing, one of the leading Georgian trade publishers, and printed from the academic text of the poem. Its pictorial programme is the work of David Machavariani (born Tbilisi, 1976; known as Kakadu), a graduate of the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts who has worked since 1997 as a comics artist and illustrator and has also designed for theatre, film and opera, including the opening production of the Abesalom and Eteri opera in Tbilisi. His full-page pen drawings reinterpret the poem's battles, courts and landscapes in a dense modern graphic idiom, and the volume opens with a colour reproduction of the medieval fresco portrait of Rustaveli. The page design places each quatrain beside a marginal numbering column with ornamental rules in burgundy and green, and the binding of red cloth with gilt-stamped calligraphic title, gilt edges and patterned endpapers gives the book the character of a modern gift edition. This is a later printing of an edition that remains in print in Georgia. It appeals to collectors of contemporary Georgian book art, to Rustaveli enthusiasts and to buyers of Georgian literature abroad looking for a handsome large-format copy.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Stanza Rare Books","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":71447512252669,"sku":null,"price":100.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0701\/6359\/5306\/files\/IMG_4987.jpg?v=1791701331","url":"https:\/\/stanzararebooks.com\/products\/rustaveli-shota-the-knight-in-the-panthers-skin-vepkhistkaosani-illustrated-by-d-machavariani-2016-in-georgian","provider":"Stanza Rare Books","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
