Ricardo occupied a place of central importance in the Soviet canon of political-economic classics: Karl Marx engaged with his arguments at length throughout «Das Kapital» and the «Theories of Surplus Value», and Lenin referred repeatedly to his theory of differential rent in the analysis of Russian agrarian capitalism. The present edition was conceived by the State Publishing House of Political Literature (Госполитиздат) as the first Soviet «Sochineniya» of Ricardo in five volumes — a project that would have placed Volume I (The Principles, 1817) and the monetary writings collected in Volume II alongside parliamentary speeches, correspondence, and the polemical pamphlets of the bullion controversy. Both volumes appeared in 1941 with parallel English-Russian title pages and the imprints «The State Political Press» \/ «ОГИЗ Госполитиздат». The German invasion of June 1941 abruptly interrupted the project: volumes III–V were never published, leaving the «pyatitomnik» a permanently incomplete two-volume set. The translation, undertaken by a team of Soviet economists and Marxist theorists, remained the standard Russian Ricardo until the post-war Sraffa-based edition of the 1950s, and the wartime imprint is now uncommon — particularly as a clean, matched pair — and is sought both by historians of economic thought and by collectors of Soviet pre-war Marxist publishing.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Stanza Rare Books","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":44292667473962,"sku":null,"price":100.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0701\/6359\/5306\/files\/IMG_1835.jpg?v=1777316436","url":"https:\/\/stanzararebooks.com\/products\/ricardo-david-collected-works-sochineniya-in-five-volumes-only-volumes-i-and-ii-issued-1941-in-russian","provider":"Stanza Rare Books","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
