Text block firm, text complete.

Compiled to mark the tenth anniversary of Soviet Lithuania (1940-1950), this anthology offers a two-century retrospective of Lithuanian poetry under the general editorship of Pavel Antokolsky, the celebrated Soviet poet-translator (himself the translator of Nizami's "Layla and Majnun" and of Georgian and other Soviet-republic poetry), working with an editorial board of leading Lithuanian and Russian literary figures including Nikolai Tikhonov and the Lithuanian poets Albinas Žukauskas, Vacys Reimeris, and Teofilis Tilvytis, and prepared with the scholarly participation of the Institute of Lithuanian Literature at the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences. The collection opens with Kristijonas Donelaitis (1714-1780), regarded as the founding figure of Lithuanian poetry and one of the earliest exponents of realism in eighteenth-century European literature, whose long poem "The Seasons" ("Metai") depicted the peasant world and serfdom of his native Lithuania Minor with unusual documentary vividness; it continues through Dionizas Poška and the nineteenth-century national revival, includes, for completeness, several representatives of the earlier "bourgeois-nationalist" current such as Maironis and Vincas Kudirka, and closes with the flowering of Soviet Lithuanian poetry in the work of Eduardas Mieželaitis, Antanas Jonynas, Juozas Macevičius, and their contemporaries. As a jubilee production, the volume was given an especially decorative treatment: an elaborate blue-and-white tooled binding of tulips and floral garlands and illuminated endpapers bearing the "10 Years of Soviet Lithuania" dedication. The anthology remains a useful compact survey of Lithuanian poetry in Russian translation and a well-preserved example of the deluxe commemorative volumes produced across the Soviet republics to mark their own jubilee anniversaries.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0701/6359/5306/files/IMG_9948_a3bfb627-96b7-4f1a-a967-8f4422718e67.jpg?v=1785149084
https://stanzararebooks.com/products/poetry-of-lithuania-an-anthology-poeziya-litvy-chief-editor-p-antokolsky-illustrated-by-a-kucas-1950-in-russian
