Educated in Constantinople, where he attended the philosophical school of Michael Psellos and was associated with the circle of John Italos, Petritsi later worked at the Georgian monastery of Petritsoni (present-day Bachkovo, Bulgaria) before returning to Georgia, where he became linked with the Gelati Academy founded under the patronage of King David IV \"the Builder\" (r. 1089-1125), whose portrait is reproduced as one of the volume's two plates, alongside a photographic view of the Petritsi Seminary. Petritsi's \"Examination of the Platonic Philosophy and of Proclus Diadochus\" is his own extended philosophical commentary accompanying his Georgian translation of Proclus's \"Elements of Theology,\" synthesizing Neoplatonic metaphysics with a Christian theological framework, and stands as the foundational text of what Georgian scholarship calls the medieval Georgian philosophical renaissance. This 1942 edition, translated from a seventeenth-century manuscript, carries an extensive critical study by the philosopher Ilya (I. D.) Pantskhava and was edited by Simon Kaukhchishvili, the leading twentieth-century authority on Petritsi's text and on medieval Georgian historiography; it was issued under the auspices of the Institute of Philosophy of the USSR Academy of Sciences. No further Russian edition appeared until 1984, when the work was reissued in Moscow's \"Philosophical Heritage\" series in a print run of 25,000 - forty-two years and a world war removed from this modest wartime Tbilisi printing of only 1,500 copies. The volume is accordingly of strong interest to collectors and libraries specializing in Byzantine and Neoplatonic philosophy, medieval Georgian intellectual history, and Soviet-era wartime scholarly publishing.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Stanza Rare Books","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":44621273792554,"sku":null,"price":250.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0701\/6359\/5306\/files\/IMG_0489.jpg?v=1785218585","url":"https:\/\/stanzararebooks.com\/products\/petritsi-ioane-examination-of-the-platonic-philosophy-and-of-proclus-diadochus-rassmotrenie-platonovskoi-filosofii-i-prokla-diadokha-1942-first-edition-in-russian","provider":"Stanza Rare Books","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
