The author, Shalva Nutsubidze (1888-1969), was among the foremost Georgian philosophers of the twentieth century, an academician of the Georgian Academy of Sciences (1944) and a founder of Tbilisi State University, best known for the \"Nutsubidze-Honigmann theory\" identifying the mysterious Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite with the fifth-century Georgian churchman Peter the Iberian, and for his celebrated Russian translation of Rustaveli's \"The Knight in the Panther's Skin\" — a project he continued, according to accounts, even while briefly imprisoned, reportedly with Stalin himself following the translation's progress. In the present study, part of Nutsubidze's broader theory of an \"Eastern Renaissance\" underlying medieval Georgian-Byzantine cultural exchange, he marshals Georgian textual evidence to argue that the Greek \"Barlaam and Ioasaph\" derives from a Georgian original reworked into Greek by the Georgian monk Euthymius the Hagiorite (Ekvtime Mtatsmindeli, d. 1028) on Mount Athos, directly challenging Franz Dölger's 1953 monograph attributing the Greek text to John of Damascus. The edition was overseen by Simon Kaukhchishvili, the leading Georgian Byzantinist of his generation, and the book's argument and textual comparisons (Chapter V presents a detailed parallel analysis of the Georgian and Greek texts) were subsequently cited and debated in Western Byzantine scholarship, including by D. M. Lang in the Bulletin of the School of Oriental and African Studies.
