In one of the most devastating ethnic deportations of the Second World War, the entire Kalmyk nation — approximately 100,000 people — was forcibly removed from their homeland in the Lower Volga and North Caucasus region and transported to Siberia, officially accused of collective collaboration with the German occupation. Between a third and a half of the Kalmyk population perished in the deportation and exile. The Kalmyk Autonomous Soviet Republic was abolished and its name erased from maps; the Kalmyks were permitted to return to a reconstituted homeland only in 1957.\u003cbr\u003eWorking from the United States as a diaspora activist, Naminov Burchinov organized the Kalmyk Committee for civil rights, engaged US government bodies, international organizations, and political figures across Southeast Asia and Europe, and assembled documentary evidence of the deportation's scale and consequences. This bilingual volume — published simultaneously in Russian and English under the joint sponsorship of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Kalmyk State University — brings together his Report to the Kalmyk People (the central document of the civil rights movement, first delivered in the 1950s), the Plans of the Kalmyk Committee for 1955-1957, and an extensive body of documentary materials, preceded by a biographical essay by V. B. Ubushaev. The parallel-text format was designed to bring this documentation to an international scholarly readership.
