Muskhelishvili built his international reputation on the method of complex potentials for two-dimensional elasticity, which reduces problems of plane stress to boundary value problems for holomorphic functions, and on the associated apparatus of Cauchy-type integrals and singular integral equations developed together with his students in Tbilisi. The present work, first published in 1946, is offered here in its second edition of 1962, thoroughly rewritten and expanded to incorporate two decades of subsequent research by the author's school. It systematically treats Cauchy-type integrals, the Plemelj-Sokhotski formulas, the Riemann boundary value problem, and singular integral equations with Cauchy kernels, with substantial applications to potential theory and the plane theory of elasticity. The book became, in its successive Russian editions and its English translation, the standard reference on the subject worldwide, cited continuously in elasticity theory, fracture mechanics, and complex analysis.
