A student of Wilhelm Wundt at Leipzig, Meumann held chairs successively at Zürich, Königsberg, Münster, Halle, Leipzig, and finally Hamburg, where he founded a major institute of psychological research, and he was the founding editor of the \"Zeitschrift für pädagogische Psychologie.\" He is principally remembered as one of the architects of \"experimentelle Pädagogik\" and as the systematizer, after Gustav Fechner, of experimental aesthetics in the German-speaking world. The present volume is the Russian translation of his \"Einführung in die Ästhetik der Gegenwart\" (Leipzig, 1908) — a concise survey of the aesthetic theories then current in European philosophy and a programmatic statement of Meumann's own empirical, psychology-based approach to the problems of beauty, taste, and artistic experience. The translation, prepared from the German by I. and V. Slonim, was issued in Moscow in 1909 in the popular-scholarly series \"Obrazovatel'naya biblioteka\" of the \"Kosmos\" publishing house and was edited and prefaced by Yuli Isayevich Aikhenwald (1872–1928) — one of the most influential Russian literary critics of the Silver Age, author of the celebrated \"Siluety russkikh pisatelei\" (\"Silhouettes of Russian Writers\"), and later one of the philosophers and intellectuals expelled from Soviet Russia on the so-called \"Philosophy Steamer\" in 1922. The \"Kosmos\" series, with its declared mission of making contemporary European scholarship accessible to a broad Russian readership through carefully edited Russian translations, was an important conduit of pre-revolutionary Russian engagement with German aesthetic and pedagogical thought.
