The book is a synthetic account of the Georgian lands from the Stone Age to the third century AD, built on the combined evidence of archaeology, Assyrian and Urartian cuneiform sources, classical authors and the early Georgian chronicles. It opens with a critical survey of Georgian historiography and of the sources, in particular the Conversion of Kartli and Kartlis Tskhovreba, and then follows the formation of the Colchian and Iberian polities, the early states of Diauehi and Kulkha, and Kartli under the Hellenistic and Roman powers. It closes with the social and political structure of the Kartlian kingdom. Three folding maps accompany the text, and a list of errata is bound in at the end. Fundamental for the study of Colchis, Iberia, Urartu and the ethnogenesis of the Caucasian peoples, the work remained the standard reference for decades and is still cited in Georgian, Russian and Western scholarship. It was issued in only 1,500 copies by the Academy of Sciences of the Georgian SSR. Although dated 1959, the colophon records signature for printing on 22 February 1960. The first edition is of lasting interest to collectors and libraries in Caucasian studies, Near Eastern archaeology, ancient history and Soviet historiography.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Stanza Rare Books","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":71444210647293,"sku":null,"price":100.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0701\/6359\/5306\/files\/IMG_4328_1ca590a3-ea7e-4f82-a0c5-bc5ea8e67e1f.jpg?v=1791663851","url":"https:\/\/stanzararebooks.com\/products\/melikishvili-g-a-on-the-history-of-ancient-georgia-k-istorii-drevnei-gruzii-first-edition-tbilisi-1959-in-russian","provider":"Stanza Rare Books","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
