Callisto, written in 1957, is the best known of his novels and the first book of a two-part work completed by The Callistians (1960). It was serialised in the magazine Yunost in the autumn of 1957 and issued as a book by the Leningrad branch of Detgiz, signed to press in December of the same year, which makes this the first book edition. The story opens on a July morning when a golden point appears in the sky and a vast white sphere lands in the Kursk region. The visitors, from a planet in the system of Sirius, prove to be a humanoid civilisation whose classless society has carried science and technology far ahead of the Earth, while a saboteur tries to disable the engines of their ship. Two young Soviet scientists leave with the guests for Callisto. The novel is a characteristic product of the Thaw-era wave of optimistic Soviet science fiction, in which first contact is an ideological as well as a scientific theme, and the epigraph from Lomonosov on the plurality of worlds ties it to an older Russian tradition. The book belongs to the Library of Adventure and Science Fiction (BPiNF), the Detgiz frame series, where it is recorded as number 28. The drawings and the cover vignette are by L. Rubinstein, and the pictorial endpapers show the white sphere above a crowd of spectators. The print run of 90,000 copies is large, yet first book appearances of Soviet science fiction in the frame series attract collectors of Soviet science fiction and frame series completists.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Stanza Rare Books","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":71696120054013,"sku":null,"price":50.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0701\/6359\/5306\/files\/IMG_6750_e6764bfb-6be7-4018-8f2e-b9604a1cc7a8.jpg?v=1792928977","url":"https:\/\/stanzararebooks.com\/products\/martynov-georgy-callisto-kallisto-science-fiction-novel-illustrated-by-l-rubinstein-first-edition-leningrad-1957-in-russian","provider":"Stanza Rare Books","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
