I. Gulia Institute of Language, Literature and History, was a leading Soviet-era specialist in the ethnography of Abkhaz traditional dress. Published in 1985 in a run of only 600 copies, \"Adornment of Clothing among the Abkhaz\" was, by the author's own account in her introduction, the first dedicated study of Abkhaz costume ornament, building on her earlier collaborative monograph \"Clothing and Dwelling of the Abkhaz\" (with L. Kh. Akaba, Tbilisi, 1982). Working within the comparative methodology of Soviet historical-ethnographic atlases, Malia classifies Abkhaz clothing ornament into two principal categories, sewn-on (nashivnye) and detachable (s'emnye) adornments, tracing their technology of manufacture, including cord- and braid-plaiting (uchkury), primitive and reed-heddle weaving, leather appliqué, and embroidery, across chronological horizons from the mid-nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth. The book is extensively illustrated with black-and-white photographic plates of surviving jewelry, tools, and textiles alongside color plates of reconstructed folk costume, offering a rare visual record of Abkhaz material culture largely undocumented elsewhere in print. Issued by the small regional \"Alashara\" press in Sukhumi in a minuscule edition, the volume predates the Georgian-Abkhaz war and the subsequent upheavals that scattered much of the Abkhazian Institute's published output; surviving copies are now genuinely scarce outside Abkhazia and the specialist collections that acquired them at the time of publication. It is of considerable interest to collectors and researchers of Caucasian ethnography, historians of Abkhaz material culture, and specialists in Soviet regional academic publishing.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Stanza Rare Books","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":44543469256746,"sku":null,"price":200.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0701\/6359\/5306\/files\/IMG_8049_8778fa61-3489-469c-8fb9-724778ac68a7.jpg?v=1783451300","url":"https:\/\/stanzararebooks.com\/products\/malia-e-adornment-of-clothing-among-the-abkhaz-ukrashenie-odezhdy-u-abkhazov-sukhumi-alashara-1985-in-russian","provider":"Stanza Rare Books","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
