For this edition the Soviet publishers appended an original article by Alexander Osipovich Gelfond (1906-1968), one of the most celebrated Soviet number theorists, who in 1934 proved the transcendence of numbers of the form a^b for algebraic a not equal to 0 or 1 and irrational algebraic b, providing (together with Theodor Schneider's independent proof) a full solution to Hilbert's seventh problem; his constant e^π is named in his honor. The pairing of Lovitt's foundational integral-equations text with a contribution from a mathematician whose reputation rested on transcendence theory reflects the breadth of interests among the editors preparing Soviet translations of Western mathematical literature.
