On 23 October the Swedish Academy awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature to Boris Pasternak, whose novel Doctor Zhivago had been rejected by Novy Mir in 1956 and had first appeared in Italy in 1957. The Soviet press campaign followed within days, and Literaturnaya Gazeta was one of its first and most prominent platforms. The issue of 25 October (No. 128) prints an unsigned editorial, \"A provocative sally of international reaction,\" together with the letter of September 1956 in which the then editorial board of Novy Mir explained its refusal to publish the novel. A covering note dated 24 October 1958 and signed by the journal's current editors, headed by Aleksandr Tvardovsky, states that the letter had not been intended for print and asks the newspaper to publish it. The issue of 1 November (No. 131) devotes a spread to \"Anger and indignation,\" letters and statements by writers and readers condemning Pasternak, among them Filipp Vasiltsev's \"A frog in the swamp.\" Pasternak had been expelled from the Writers' Union on 28 October. The year's imprint names Vsevolod Kochetov as editor-in-chief, with Vladimir Druzin acting in several summer and autumn issues. \u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Stanza Rare Books","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":71521545486589,"sku":null,"price":1200.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0701\/6359\/5306\/files\/IMG_5746_e864067c-f306-4525-b814-e7bef2f21570.jpg?v=1791658219","url":"https:\/\/stanzararebooks.com\/products\/literaturnaya-gazeta-literary-gazette-complete-year-1958-in-two-bound-volumes-pasternak-affair-no-128-with-first-publication-of-the-1956-novy-mir-letter-no-131-anger-and-indignation-nos-1-155-moscow-1958-in-russian","provider":"Stanza Rare Books","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
