The journal proved remarkably long-lived, continuing under a succession of Soviet and post-Soviet publishers into the twenty-first century, with further issues appearing in 1949, 1952, 1982, 1986, 1992, 1998, 2005, and as recently as 2015 — but it is these opening installments, printed in the tense years immediately before and during the Second World War in modest runs of 1,500 copies, that are hardest to find complete on today's market. Each volume was edited by Giorgi Leonidze (1899-1966) himself — one of twentieth-century Georgia's foremost poets, later the Museum's namesake — assisted by leading Georgian literary scholars including Giorgi Abzianidze and Sergo Tsaishvili. The journal served as the Museum's primary vehicle for publishing archival discoveries: unpublished letters, memoirs, manuscript variants, and biographical documentation drawn directly from its holdings. Books 1-2 (1940) assemble foundational source material for the biographies of Ilia Chavchavadze — the \"father of the nation\" of modern Georgian literature — together with materials on Iakob Gogebashvili, founder of Georgian pedagogical literature, memoirs of the poet Vazha-Pshavela, and studies and unpublished autograph material relating to the Romantic poet Nikoloz Baratashvili. Books 3-4 (1942), issued during wartime and correspondingly scarcer still, are devoted in their entirety to Akaki Tsereteli (1840-1915), tied to the observance of his birth centenary, with firsthand memoirs by contemporaries and a photographic frontispiece portrait. Together these founding volumes offer close to a thousand pages of primary Kartvelological source material on five central figures of the nineteenth-century Georgian literary canon.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Stanza Rare Books","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":44545396015146,"sku":null,"price":240.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0701\/6359\/5306\/files\/IMG_8253_a77735cf-4026-4a1b-858e-5f11a5e6bcc4.jpg?v=1783502095","url":"https:\/\/stanzararebooks.com\/products\/literaturis-matiane-literary-chronicle-books-1-4-editor-in-chief-giorgi-leonidze-tbilisi-1940-1942-in-georgian","provider":"Stanza Rare Books","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
