From 1997 to 2003 Kychanov served as director of the St. Petersburg Branch of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, one of the most distinguished positions in Russian oriental scholarship. The volume presents, on the basis of Chinese and other written sources, a systematic comparative study of state formation among the major nomadic and border peoples of Central Asia, Manchuria, and adjacent regions from the Xiongnu period through the Manchu Qing. The peoples surveyed span more than twenty political entities: Xiongnu (Huns), Yuezhi, Scythians, Wusun, Wuhuan, Xianbei, Toba, Tuyuhun, Fuyu, Chouci, Rouran, Tibet, Nanzhao, Balhae (Bohai), Turks, Uyghurs and Kyrgyz, Khitan, Jurchen, Mongols, Manchus, Dzungar Khanate, and the Khalkha Mongols of the seventeenth century. For each, Kychanov reconstructs the processes of social stratification and class formation, the legends of dynastic origin, the nature of the ruler's sacred authority as a grant from Heaven, and the structural influence of Chinese state institutions. The book concludes with two synthetic chapters on the sacralization of nomadic power and on general patterns of nomadic statehood. A revised and expanded second edition appeared in 2010 under the title \"History of the Ancient and Medieval States Adjacent to China (from the Huns to the Manchus),\" but the original 1997 edition with a print run of 750 copies remains the bibliographically primary text and is rarely found on the market. An essential reference for scholars of Inner Asian history, Mongolian studies, Tangutology, and the comparative study of nomadic political institutions.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Stanza Rare Books","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":44343507484714,"sku":null,"price":60.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0701\/6359\/5306\/files\/IMG_3373.jpg?v=1778335839","url":"https:\/\/stanzararebooks.com\/products\/kychanov-e-i-nomadic-states-from-the-huns-to-the-manchus-kochevye-gosudarstva-ot-gunnov-do-manchzhurov-1997-in-russian","provider":"Stanza Rare Books","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
