Kuznetsova argues that costume functions as an active narrative device rather than mere decoration, tracing how it establishes social class, historical period and regional setting, shapes character psychology, and contributes to a film's stylistic and genre identity. The study draws its examples chiefly from Soviet and international cinema of the mid-twentieth century, illustrated with seventeen plates of film stills, including costume analyses of Soviet wartime and post-war productions.
