Trained in St. Petersburg and Berlin in the late 1890s, Kuznetsov was one of the first architects in the Russian Empire to deploy reinforced concrete and ferro-glass shells on a major scale; his prerevolutionary works in Moscow include the studio building of the Stroganov School, the Mikhailov Passage, the Saving Bank on Rozhdestvenka, and a series of pioneering industrial structures, while in the 1920s and 1930s he led the design of the AMO\/ZIL complex and other landmarks of Soviet industrial architecture. After the Revolution he became a central figure in Soviet architectural pedagogy, and this 744-page volume represents the codified outcome of more than a decade of teaching: a comprehensive, illustration-rich treatment of every constructive element of the building, from foundations, walls and partitions through floors, ceilings, stairs, doors and windows to roofs, light wells and special structures, with attention to materials, statics and the integration of construction with architectural form.
