Kazimierz Kuratowski (1896-1980) and Andrzej Mostowski (1913-1975) were leading contributors to topology, set theory and mathematical logic respectively, both members of the Polish Academy of Sciences and internationally recognized authorities in the foundations of mathematics. Kuratowski was already familiar to Russian readers through the translation of his major two-volume \"Topology\"; Mostowski was one of the foremost specialists in mathematical logic of his generation. First published in Polish in 1951, the book underwent a substantial revision and expansion for its 1966 Polish edition, and the corrected English edition of 1967, issued by North-Holland and the Polish Scientific Publishers in the Studies in Logic and the Foundations of Mathematics series, served as the source text for the present Russian translation. The book presents set theory on the basis of the Zermelo-Fraenkel axiom system, with extensive worked examples illustrating applications of set-theoretic methods in algebra and topology, and its concluding chapter offers a substantial introduction to descriptive set theory, analytic and projective sets, whose methods found significant application across twentieth-century mathematics.
