Kuratowski was a founding figure of the Warsaw school of mathematics and of the set-theoretic tradition in Polish topology; his name survives in the Kuratowski closure axioms that provide one of the standard axiomatic definitions of a topological space, in Kuratowski's theorem characterizing planar graphs by forbidden K5 and K3,3 subdivisions, and in the Kuratowski-Zorn lemma, an equivalent formulation of the axiom of choice fundamental to modern set theory. First published in Polish and French in the 1930s, with the second volume's manuscript completed on the eve of the Second World War and surviving the conflict intact, the treatise went through three French editions by 1961 before being substantially revised and expanded for this simultaneous Russian and English printing. Volume I closes with appendices by Andrzej Mostowski, on applications of topology to mathematical logic, and Roman Sikorski, on its applications to functional analysis, reflecting Kuratowski's central place within the wider Warsaw circle of logicians and analysts.
